New top-level domains from ICANN

The Board of ICANN approved two days ago a recommendation that could see a whole range of new names introduced to the Internet’s addressing system.

A final version of the implementation plan must be approved by the ICANN Board before the new process is launched. It is intended that the final version will be published in early 2009.

Presently, users have a limited range of 21 top level domains to choose from — names that we are all familiar with like .com, .org, .info.

This proposal allows applicants for new names to self-select their domain name so that choices are most appropriate for their customers or potentially the most marketable. It is expected that applicants will apply for targeted community strings such as (the existing) .travel for the travel industry and .cat for the Catalan community (as well as generic strings like .brandname or .yournamehere). There are already interested consortiums wanting to establish city-based top level domain, like .nyc (for New York City), .berlin and .paris.

Upon approval of the implementation plan, it is planned that applications for new names will be available in the second quarter of 2009.

HiJackThis utility from TrendMicro™ and MySQL

Yesterday I downloaded HiJackThis utility from TrendMicro™ to get rid of the Bonjour Service from Adobe. I got rid of that but I also unintentionally got rid of MySQL, today getting a beautiful message on localhost:

Could not connect to MySQL: Can’t connect to MySQL server on ‘localhost’ (10061)

So, if you have MySQL on your localhost, don’t use HiJackThis unless you want to reinstall some parts of your server.

Invested: 2.5 million €; Profit: 70 visitors per day

Yes, the Romanian Government invested 2.5 million Euros in a website which now doesn’t have more than 70 unique visitors per day. The website address is www.business-entrepreneur.ro.

The Romanian Government contracted 4 foreign companies to create this website. Because of the poor results, now another 1 million € will be invested in revitalizing and rebranding.

Although IT specialists stated that the invesment is absolutely ridiculous compared to the results, nobody checked this project and the way the funds have been spent.

PHARE funds thrown through the window: 46 experts contributed at this project, 15 internationals and 31 romanians. In order to host about 70 visitors per day, another 550.000 Euros have been spent only on the hardware: 15 servers, an Oracle platform, 5 laptops, 5 monitors, one projector and 2 printers (I guess laser printers :D ).

Well, if we link to this 2.5 mil Euro website, maybe it will reach 100 visitors soon. ;)

Indexed by Google in less than 72 hours

I opened up this blog three days ago. Today I got a surprise, Google indexed my main page.

I read on forums messages by people complaining that three weeks have passed and their website was still not indexed. Maybe Google likes Wordpress? Anyway, what I have done was only to submit my blog on Google Webmasters.

The new Sony Ericsson XPERIA™ X1

Yesterday I was checking the Sony Ericsson official website and I saw this model. It caught my attention because of the big screen and the computer-type keyboard. Well, this is the first mobile phone with a full QWERTY keyboard and Windows Mobile 6. Also, this model will come with a touchscreen of 3 inch and a resolution of 800×480 pixels.

You can open the phone by a horizontal slide. This model will come with HSUPA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access - 5.8 Mbit/s), Bluetooth, Assisted GPS (aGPS), WiFi, microSD and a 3.2 MegaPixels camera.
